UB professors Abel Mariné and Claudi Mans honoured for their commitment to science dissemination

Abel Mariné, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Bromatology, and Claudi Mans, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, receive the Award for the Best Science and Humanities Dissemination Activities. The main objective of the prize, given by the Board of Trustees and the Doctors' Senate of the University of Barcelona (UB), is to promote science communication activities and knowledge transfer in our society.

The award ceremony takes place on Tuesday 17 March, at 7 p.m., in the Aula Magna of the Historic Building .The event is chaired by the vice-rector for Science Policy of the UB, Enric I. Canela, and the president of the Board of Trustees, Salvador Alemany. Award winners, Abel Mariné and Claudi Mans, as well as Ramón Clotet, secretary of the Triptolemos Foundation, also participate in the ceremony.

Abel Mariné Font (Barcelona, 1943) is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Nutrition and Bromatology of the Faculty of Pharmacy and academic coordinator of the UB-Bullipedia Unit. He was one of the promoters of the Food and Nutrition Campus of the UB, where he heads the expert committee of the Càtedra UB Carn i Salut, located on the former campus. He is a distinguished expert on nutrition and food sciences, especially on the field of the biogenic amines and the polyamines, interactions between food and drugs, food security and community nutrition.

Moreover, Professor Mariné was the director general for Universities of the Government of Catalonia (1986-1900), member of the Board of Experts on Food Safety of the World Health Organization (1984-1988) and manager of the Food Technology Programme of the Interministerial Commision of Research and Technology (1994-1998). In 2012, he received the Ramon Turró Prize conferred by the Catalan Centre for Nutrition. In the field of science communication, Abel Mariné usually participates in the media (radio, TV and press). Every two weeks, he publishes an article in the newspaper Punt-AVUI. He collaborates with several organizations (Catalan Food Security Agency, Catalan Public Health Agency) and gives numerous lectures addressed to the general public. He is member of the Institute for Catalan Studies and the president of the Catalan Association of Food Science.

 

Claudi Mans Teixidó (Badalona, 1948), Emeritus Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, is member of the scientific committee of the UB-Bullipedia Unit. He is one of the members of the boards of the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication, the Chemists' Association of Catalonia and the Catalan Association of Food Science. In addition, he is the scientific director of the Spanish Committee of Detergents, Surfactants and Related (CED). He was the dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of the UB between 1991 and 1994, and he headed the Experimental Sciences and Mathematics Division of the UB between 1994 and 2000. From 2009 to 2012, he was the delegate coordinator of the Food and Nutrition Campus of the UB.

Concerning science dissemination activities, he collaborates with CosmoCaixa, Termcat and the Alícia Foundation, as well as with the supplement Ara Ciència. He promoted the creation of the ExpAliments festival that takes place every year on the Food and Nutrition Campus, and the awards given to projects developed by secondary students Premi UB - Ferran Adrià amb Gallina Blanca and Premi Xavier Domingo. He has published more than 200 scientific articles, presented around 100 papers at major conferences, and given about 300 lectures, particularly in the field of food chemistry communication. He has some blogs on science dissemination and he is the author of the books Sferificaciones y macarrones (2010), La vaca esférica (2008), Els secrets de les etiquetes (2007) and La truita cremada (2005).
