The UB is once again the only Spanish university included in the worldʼs top 200 universities

This is the second consecutive year that the University of Barcelona (UB), the Catalan higher education centre with the highest number of students, is considered one of the best 200 universities in the world according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a classification also known as the Shanghai Ranking. To be exact, the UB is located between positions 151 and 200 and it is the only Spanish institution included in the ranking.

This is the second consecutive year that the University of Barcelona (UB), the Catalan higher education centre with the highest number of students, is considered one of the best 200 universities in the world according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a classification also known as the Shanghai Ranking. To be exact, the UB is located between positions 151 and 200 and it is the only Spanish institution included in the ranking. 

Moreover, the UB continues being one of the 75 top higher education centres in the field of Medicine. The UB is one of the top 200 universities in the fields of Sciences and Life Sciences. Regarding subjects, it outstands in Chemistry (it is one of the top 150 universities) and in Physics (in the top 200).

Once again, ARWU is headed by American universities: Harvard, Stanford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and California (Berkeley. The top European university is Cambridge, which ranks fifth. In total, Spain has five centres among the top 500 universities. In the case of Catalan universities, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) are between positions 201 and 300, and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is between positions 401 and 500.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities also elaborates rankings in the fields of Natural Sciences and Mathematics; Engineering/Technology and Computer Sciences; Life and Agricultural Sciences; Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy, and Social Sciences. Furthermore, it publishes rankings in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Economics and Business. Concerning methodology, ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Reuters, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.
