Yesterday, 9 September, the Aula Magna of the University of Barcelona (UB) hosted the award ceremony of the 20,000th doctoral thesis introduced in the repository Theses and Dissertations Online (TDX). Laura Ibánez Lladó, PhD student in Biomedicine at the UB, is the author of the 20,000th thesis, entitled Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, asymptomatic atherosclerosis, and inflammation: A candidate gene study.

The award ceremony was chaired by the vice-rector for Science Policy of the UB, Enric I. Canela; the director general for Research of the Government of Catalonia, Josep Maria Martorell, and the director general of the Consortium of University Services of Catalonia (CSUC), Miquel Puig. The event included the lecture “Ciència oberta: noves maneres de fer ciència que apropen la recerca a la societat”, pronounced by Ángel Borrego, professor at the Faculty of Library and Information Science of the UB.

The 20,000th thesis has been developed at the University Hospital Mútua de Terrassa and presented at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UB. David Dalmau Juanola, head of the HIV/AIDS Unit at the University Hospital Mútua de Terrassa , and David Gallardo Garcia, project manager at the Molecular Genetics Veterinary Service the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), supervised the thesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible association between genetic variants and gene expression of genes involved in inflammation and cardiovascular risk measures in a cohort of HIV-infected subjects. The PhD thesis is also available on the UB Digital Repository.

The TDX is a digital cooperative repository, managed by the CSUC, which contains digitalized doctoral theses read at Catalan universities. The consultation of theses is opened, so the repository offers authors a tool to publicise, around the world and on the Internet, the results of university research, enhancing its visibility. Founded fourteen years ago, the repository is consolidated: nowadays, it contains more than 20,600 doctoral thesis read at eighteen universities and it gives access to more than 58,500 thesis available on other repositories. In 2015, it received more than 35 million enquiries.
