Joan Elias, professor of Mathematics, is the new rector of the University of Barcelona, after having obtained the 53,07% of the weighted vote in the second round of the elections for the Rectorʼs Office which took place on December 1. The other candidate, Màrius Rubiralta, professor of Organic Chemistry, obtained the 46,93% of the weighted vote. Joan Elias will lead the government of the University for four years.

Joan Elias, professor of Mathematics, is the new rector of the University of Barcelona, after having obtained the 53,07% of the weighted vote in the second round of the elections for the Rectorʼs Office which took place on December 1. The other candidate, Màrius Rubiralta, professor of Organic Chemistry, obtained the 46,93% of the weighted vote. Joan Elias will lead the government of the University for four years.

 
The elections, which called 62.998 people from different university groups to participate, were carried out with no incident. At the end of the day, 8.671 people had voted, corresponding to the 13,76 of the total (lower participation than the first roundʼs, which was of 16.10%). Out of all these votes, 8.327 were for the candidates, 195 blank and 149 spoiled.

The number of votes of each university group are the following: out of a total of 2.009 permanent professors who could cast, 1.472 voted (73,27 %, against 76,21 % of the first round); out of a total of 4.074 teaching and research staff, 1.040 voted (25,53 % against 29,06 % of the first round); out of a total of 54.645 students, 4.740 voted (8,67 % against 10,89 % of the first round); and out of a total of 2.270 administrative and service staff, 1.419 voted (62,51 % against 64,98 % of the first round).
 
Weighted vote
 
In this second round, votes were distributed in the following way:
 
Joan Elias got a 53,07 % of the weighted vote: 22,69% coming from the permanent professors; 4,33 % from other teaching and research staff; 20,01 % from the students, and 6,05% from administrative and service staff.
 
Màrius Rubiralta got the 46, 93 % of the weighted votes: 29,31 % from permanent professors; 4,67 % from other teaching and research staff, 9,99 % from the students, and 3,95 % from administrative and service staff.
 
This is the fourth time, according to the current regulation, that the university community elects the rector through direct election and secret and free ballot. The vote is weighted by collectives, according to the percentages stated in the Statute of the University of Barcelona. Therefore, the permanent professors (2.009 people) computes for the 51% of the total; other teaching and research staff (4.074) 9%; students (54.645 people), 30 %; and administrative and service staff (2.270 people) the 10%.

The new rector
 
Joan Elias García (Barcelona, 1956) is professor at the Department of Maths and Computing of the University of Barcelona. During his academic life, he has combined teaching, research on commutative algebra and management. He has been the main researcher in several research projects, national networks and actions integrated in several countries. Moreover, Elias was the General Editor of Real Sociedad Matemática Española (Royal Spanish Mathematical Society), and member of the Publications Committee of the European Mathematical Society. Regarding the fields of management, he was Head of Studies (1992-1993) and Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics (1996-2002), Vice-Rector of the University of Barcelona (2008-2012) and Secretary-General of the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia (2006).
