The team, made by four students of Carlos III University of Madrid, won the first edition of the Debate Tournament of the University of Barcelona. The training was given to the team representing the Comillas Pontifical University of Madrid at the finals, on October 29. It was the culmination of a 3-day competition, which gathered thirty-seven students from ten different Spanish universities at the Historical Building of the UB.

The team from Carlos III University of Madrid was formed by students José Ángel Muñoz (Law and Business Administration), as the captain, Daniel Otero (Economics), Antonio Torregrossa (student of Law and Political Science at the University of Barcelona, SÉNECA student in Madrid) and Reyes Carrillo (Law), who got the award for the best public speaker. “Should data protection be a human right?” was the topic on which both teams had to debate. The winner defended the contrary position and the finalist defended the position in favor of it.

This has been the first time that the University of Barcelona organized this ludic and educational competition; open to all students from Spanish universities, so that they have the chance to learn how to debate and gain skills in public speaking. The activity has been organized by the Debate Association of the University of Barcelona (ADUB), in collaboration with the Vice-rectorʼs Office for Academic Policy, Students and Quality and the Student Support Services. Moreover, it had the support from the Centre de Recursos per a les Associacions Juvenils (Resource Center for Youth Associations, CRAJ) of the Barcelona City Council and it has the sponsorship of CaixaBank.

This first edition of the Debate Tournament of the University of Barcelona had a successful participation. A total of eleven teams coming from different universities have participated in the activity: University of Malaga, Debate Club Santiago de Compostela, Comillas Pontifical University, Francisco de Vitoria University, University of Navarra, Carlos III University of Madrid, the Universitat Politècnica de València, the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (the only one with two participating team) and Pompeu Fabra University, apart from the University of Barcelona.
