It is more and more common for professionals who studied at the University School of Cinema and Visual Communication of Catalonia (ESCAC), affiliated at the University of Barcelona, to be successful at cinema ceremonies. Last Saturday, five graduates from ESCAC were recognized in the 31st edition of the Goya Awards for their participation in the film A monster calls. Among them is the director, Juan Antonio Bayona; the supervising sound editor, Oriol Tarragó; director of photography, Òscar Faura, and  film editors Bernat Viaplana and Jaume Martí. This recognition comes a week after the  Catalan Film Academy awarded the same film with eight Gaudí Awards.

ESCAC former students outstand in number of nominations

Apart from the awardees, ESCAC has made a presence among the nominees in this 31st edition of the Goya Awards: Neli Reguera, graduated in ESCAC, was nominated for the best novel direction for María (y los demás); Arnau Valls was nominated for the best photography, for Tarde para la ira, and last, in the category of best short-film, two projects from ESCAC were nominated for a Goya: En la azotea, by the graduate Damià Serra and produced by ESCAC Films (awarded in the last International Cinema Week of Valladolid); and Graffiti, by the former student Lluís Quílez (Meliès de Plata Award at Sitges Festival and recent Forqué Prize).

All these awards and nominations for the Goya and Gaudí Awards are another proof of the excellence of ESCAC in training new talents in the cinema industry: experts and first-level filmmakers that increase the prestige and artistic quality of the Catalan and Spanish cinema.
