Javier Martín Vide, professor of Physical Geography and director of the Water Research Institute (IdRA) of the UB, was awarded with the 4th Award for the Best Science and Humanities Dissemination Activities on Wednesday, April 26. This award, promoted by the Board of Trustees and the Doctorsʼ Senate of the University of Barcelona, aims to promote the dissemination of scientific activity and knowledge to society. The award was given on in a ceremony with the Rector of the UB, Joan Elias, and the acting President of the Board of Trustees, Joan Corominas, with the participation of Miguel Ángel Torras, President of Bodegues Torres.

Javier Martín Vide, professor of Physical Geography and director of the Water Research Institute (IdRA) of the UB, was awarded with the 4th Award for the Best Science and Humanities Dissemination Activities on Wednesday, April 26. This award, promoted by the Board of Trustees and the Doctorsʼ Senate of the University of Barcelona, aims to promote the dissemination of scientific activity and knowledge to society. Expert on climatology, climate change, analysis of precipitation and climate risks, Javier Martín Vide, also mathematician, has published more than twenty books and two hundred articles and book chapters, and has actively participated in more than a hundred meetings and conferences on geography, climatology and meteorology. Some of his recent works are El temps i el clima (Serra dʼOr Critics Award, 2004), Los mapas del tiempo (2005), La climatología española. Pasado, presente y futuro (2007), Aspectos económicos del cambio climático en España (2007) and La investigación geográfica en España (1990-2012) (2013). He is also co-author for Atles climàtic de Catalunya, published in 1997 and updated in 2003.


He has participated as expert supervisor in the fourth and fifth assessment report on climate change; a study of reference elaborated every six years by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (GICC), and has supervised the editing of the Third report on climate change in Catalonia (TICCC).

Martín Vied has undergone a scientific dissemination task of his researchʼs results, focused on several conferences and courses and regular participation on the media. Between 2005 and 2007, he had his own radio program, called Lʼagenda del medi ambient, in Ràdio 4, broadcasted every week, in which invited speakers were experts on several environmental subjects. After this experience with scientific dissemination on the media, Martín Vide has coordinated the current UB-specific masterʼs degree in Applied Climatology and the Media. In 2009, he published the dissemination book Apaga la luz. El libro sobre el cambio climático, in collaboration with the journalist José Luis Gallego.

Also, Javier Martín Vide is the coordinator of the Research Group of Climatology of the UB. He has been the president of the Spanish Geographers Association, the Spanish Association of Climatology , and of the Advisory Committee of the Meteorological Service of Catalonia. He is currently the president of the Spanish Committee for the World Climate Research Programme (RCRP). In 2011 he joined the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona as numerary member, is corresponding academician of the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences (Belgium), and this February he has joined the Academia Malagueña de Ciencias (Academy of Sciences of Malaga) as corresponding academic.
