This week, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science is holding an international conference on dynamic systems, one of the basic tools to mold mathematical systems, which enable to make predictions in many situations. These kinds of mathematics can be applied to several systems that evolve over time, ranging from the study of stability in planetary orbits, he movement in confined particles in accelerators or chemical reactions, to the study of neuronal networks in the field of neuroscience.

The conference, entitled “A broad perspective on finite and infinite dimensional dynamical systems” (FIDDS-17), is organized by the University of Barcelona with the collaboration of Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (Center for Mathematical Research, CRM) and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. Advertised as Llavefest-FIDDS17, the meeting commemorates the sixtieth birthday of the mathematician Rafael de la Llave, professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA). De la Llave studied at the Complutense University of Madrid and his worked on his doctorate in Princeton. His research is focused on the study of orbits that determine the evolution of a system on the long run, such as periodic or quasiperiodic solutions, or invariable manifolds. Likewise, he is interested in the applications of this research onto models from different sciences.

Among the distinguished speakers to take part in the conference are Luís Caffarelli, from the University of Texas at Austin (USA), Jean-Pierre Eckmann, from the University of Geneva (Switzerland), Ioannis Kevredikis, from Princeton University (USA), Dmitry Treschev, from Moscow State University (Russia) and Lai-Sang Young, from the New York University (USA).
