The University of Barcelona is the leading higher education institution at a state level regarding the number of scientific citations, according to the fourth edition of the Transparent Ranking: Top Universities by Google Scholar, created by the Cybermetrics Lab from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). The University of Barcelona gathers 276.287 citations, figures that list the UB in the 160th position worldwide. The University of Granada, with 250.454 citations, is the other institution of the state appearing in the top 200, holding the position 197th.

The first five positions are held by Pompeu Fabra University (302) with 182.719 citations, University of Valencia (339) with 164.056 citations, and the Complutense University of Madrid (346) with 161.148 citations.

At a global scale, Harvard University leads the ranking indisputably, with 1.734.533 citations, followed from far by Stanford University (1.197.114) and Johns Hopkins University (1.152.185). There are eight North American institutions and two English institutions in the top ten.

This list measures the impact and visibility in Google Scholar. The ranking, which analyses more than 4.000 universities worldwide, is based on the use of the researchersʼ institutional profiles in Google Scholar. The total number of citations from the universities has been calculated out of these profiles.
