Afterwards, Giralt will give the opening lecture, in which he will introduce the main challenges for the drugs that have to act against diseases affecting the central nervous system and will talk about the strategies that are being studied in order to overcome those.

Ernest Giralt, professor from the Department of Inorganic and Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry, is also researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Research (IRB Barcelona) where he leads the Laboratory of Design, Synthesis and Structure of Peptides and Proteins, and coordinates the Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Programme, one of the fifth programmes in which the research of IRB Barcelona is structured. In 2014, he obtained the Ciutat de Barcelona Award in the category of experimental sciences and technology, and was also awarded with the National Research Prize (2011), the highest scientific award given in Spain. Also, he received the Josef Rudinger Memorial Lecture (2014) and Max Bergmann Medal (2014), among other honours. Professor Giralt is also the co-founder of Iproteos, an IRB Barcelona spin-off created in 2011.
