Framed within the 2017 call, the RecerCaixa program will fund four research projects carried out by researchers of the University of Barcelona within the field of humanities and culture, education and public policies. The new edition will assign 1,6 million euros to promote twenty new excellence projects -out of a total of 283 that were submitted- by research groups from public and private universities and Catalan research centers.

During the grant ceremony, held on Feburary 21, the results for some awarded projects from previous editions were presented. These projects were led by the researchers Ramon Gomis (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and Hospital Clínic-IDIBELL), Rosa Estopà (UPF) and Josep Domènech (UAB).

A review on the merchant culture


In the area of humanities and culture, the awarded project was “FÈNIX. La Formació dʼun entorn internacional en xarxa: els negocis dʼun mercader català en el transit de la modernitat”, led by the lecturer María Dolores López, from the Faculty of Geography and History. FÈNIX aims to increase the knowledge on the European cultural heritage and to answer some of the main doubts current society has, through a comprehensive diagnostic analysis of the past. The project also aims to contribute to the socialization of the knowledge out of wide dissemination mechanisms, such as on-site exhibitions and a virtual museum.


New challenges in educational policies on economics


In education, one of the selected projects was “Necessitats de formació a la Catalunya del future (2030) i canvis necessaris al sistema de formació profressional regalt per cobrir-les”, by the experts Josep Oriol Escardíbul, lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the UB, and Antoni Josep Mora, from Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. This initiative tries to discover the needs of the future professional training in Catalan economics, depending on the changes in the required skills by social demand and the new jobs. Also, the project will analyse the current situation of the professional training to find out the necessary changes in the training system to fill future training needs.


Oral skills for future professions


“Habilitats orals per a les professions del futur: un programa dʼintervenció en el currículum de secundària a Catalunya” is another of the educational projects to be funded by this program. Coordinated by Joan Carles Mora (Faculty of Philology of the UB) and Pilar Prieto (Pompeu Fabra University), the project wants to raise awareness among the educational community in high schools on the importance of promoting oral skills. This initiative will also provide a program of educational intervention to add the most recent scientific knowledge on educational techniques for oral skills in secondary education schoolsʼ résumé in Catalan, Spanish and English.


Improving the access to urban areas


The proposal of measures to clear the cities, focused on the regulation of the access to the urban areas and internal mobility in the cities is the core idea of one of the awarded research projects in the framework of public policies. “Congestió viària en conglomeracions urbanes: Situació i propostes per a una ciutat sostenible” is an initiative by the lecturers Xavier Fageda, from the Faculty of Economics and Business of the UB, and Ricardo Flores-Fillol, from Universitat Rovira i Virgili, to analyse the benefits that are related to the mechanisms throughout the prices to monitor the access to cities. This research project will study the role these measures can play, which are based on car park and the regulation of spaces (such as low emission zones).
