Registration for Els Juliols 2018 is now open, and offers a reduced fee for those 20-hour course registrations to be completed before May 31. This year, the UB presents a hundred courses in almost all areas of knowledge and there will be now twenty courses aimed at the professional audience specifically, which are shorter than the others: 16, 12 and 8 hours.

The 22nd edition of the summer courses in the University of Barcelona will take place from July 2 to 22, and lessons can be taken in the morning or the afternoon. The course offering is structured into ten theme areas: from Arts, music and cinema to Technology and energies, Economics and Business, Philosophy and Natural Sciences and Environmental Sciences. The website for Els Juliols offers the detailed program of the trainings as well as all the information regarding registration and the academic recognition of the activities.

Most of the courses in Els Juliols take place at the Historical Building of the University of Barcelona. There are others that will be taught in Hospitalet de Llobregat, Montmeló, Sant Joan Despí, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Viladecans, Vilafranca del Penedès and in Cornellà de Llobregat, where from July 2 to 6 will be four courses within the framework of the ninth edition of the Summer Women School.

Courses for everyone

As usual, with the aim of offering courses for everyone, this year’s program includes many new activities, such as the course Filosofies i polítiques de la vida, coordinated by the lecturer Laura Llevadot, which will cover the questions of life with late 20th century and early 21st century contemporary authors, such as Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze and Agamben; or the course Filòlegs i sociolingüistes, detectius de les paraules, coordinated by Cristina Illamola, which will offer an approach to sociolinguistics and will study one of the fields in which sociolinguistics are widely used: forensic linguistics.

Science is also present in the courses, such as Els ritmes biologics: la dansa de la vida, which will show the students the main biological rhythms in our body and how these are led by an internal clock; Un relat sobre el coneixement de la Terra, which aims to show how we reached the current knowledge of some aspects of our planet, or Aliments i cervell, a course analysing the bidirectional relation between food, nutrition, gastronomy and mental health.

Moreover, coinciding with the ephemerid of the May events in 1968, this year, there are two courses on this topic: 1968: relat historic d’un any viscut perillosament and 1968: quan empal·lidí el vermell de les senyeres.

Also, the most successful courses from other editions will be present in this year’s edition as well. These are Introducció a les ciències forenses, which aims to show the basic concepts of forensic sciences and debate on a series of cases to show the main resolution methods, as well as basic data on legal action. Another example is Mirades sobre l’abordatge del maltractament infantil, a theory and practical course to know and analyse the different situations of suspiciousness and certainty when it comes to children abuse. Guidelines and technical criteria will be provided as well as detection and intervention tools to tackle these situations, and different experiences from different fields of action, services and professionals will be presented.

Discounts and economic aids

Apart from offering a reduced fee for those registrations before May 31 for the 20-horu courses, the UB group and others (such as La Vanguardia or Núvol subscribers), can use a special discount in any of the courses until the end of the registration period. The students, in addition, can validate two academic credits for each 20-hour course.

The University of Barcelona offers thirty aids to join a 20-hour course in Els Juliols 2018 thanks to its collaboration with the company ACCIONA. These aids are aimed at bachelor, master or doctoral degree students who are registered in the University of Barcelona during the academic year 2017/2018, and the discount accounts for a reduction of 74,50 euros in the registration fee.  In order to apply, the following steps need to be followed, between April 16 and June 4:
•    Registering online or in person, paying for the registration as collective with the UB Community discount (149 euros).
•    Applying for the aid online in the Online office of the University of Barcelona or via email at beca.colaboracio@ub.edu.
•    Printing the application and the other required documents, which are stated in the bases of the call and hand them in any Registration Office of the UB.

Once the results are published, applicants will receive them via text message.
