Students of Archaeology work on the excavations in el Born
This house is located between Rec Comtal, Pla dʼen Llull and plaça del Bornet. In its last history phase, it was owned by Pere Sanmartí, who lived there with his wife two children, a servant and a maid. The excavation will solve doubts on the origins of the building and the relation with the property next door, known as casa Martorell before this was destroyed. Both properties were unified in different moments over their history, according to documentary sources.
This campaign consolidates the project on archaeological interventions and strengthens the proposal by El Born CCM for the training of future archaeologists. Since 2016, the site in el Born has been included in the internships of the bachelorʼs degree in Archaeology of the University of Barcelona. A team of professional archaeologists and restorers will work on the excavation, both in the field and the processes of inventory, classification and restoration of the found pieces.
The site in el Born is one of the eleven places where the UB students of Archaeology can carry out their practice mandatory lessons. These sites are located in several places around Catalonia and cover all time periods: Prehistory in the sites of Abric del Xicotó (Alòs de Balaguer) and Can Sadurní (Begues); the Iberian site in Puig Castellar (Santa Coloma de Gramenet). Regarding the Roman period, there are Camp de les Lloses (Tona) and Torre Llauder (Mataró); Santa Margarida (Martorell), lʼEsquerda (Roda de Ter) and the castle and monastery of Alguaire belong to the Middle Ages. The excavations in el Born belong to the Early Modern Period, while the workshop of the ceramist Tarrés in the Faculty of Geography and History is framed within the Late Modern Period, like the excavation in Vilalba dels Arcs, an area of fighting positions, evacuation lines and shelter during the Battle of the Ebro.
