Elías Campo, director of IDIBAPS, director of Research at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and the Clinic Foundation for Biomedical Research and professor of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Barcelona (UB) has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine of the United States.

This is one of the highest honors in the field of health, science and medicine, and it is given to those professionals who proved an excellent level of scientific contributions and service commitment to their task. This mention is an honor to the groundbreaking discoveries made by Campo in the field of the molecular pathogenesis of Bcell neoplasms including chronic lymphotic leukemia, mantle cell lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and plasmablastic lymphoma.

With Elias Campo as a new member, there are now three Spanish members of NAM. Josep Dalmau, ICREA lecturer at IDIBAPS and UB lecturer, and Maria J. Alonso, from the University of Santiago de Compostela are also members of NAM.

Elías Campo, head of the IDIBAPS Human and experimental functional oncomorphology group, has co-led together with Carlos Lopez-Otín, the studies of the genome and epigenome complete sequencing -chemical changes of genetic matter and its regulating proteins- of chronic lymphatic leukaemia. This kind of leukaemia is the most common in western countries, with more than a thousand new patients each year in Spain. These studies have been revolutionary in cancer research.

Author of more than 600 scientific articles, Elías Campo was the president of the European Association of Haematopathology, he is member of the International Cancer Genome Consortium Governing Committee, and is member of the WHO editing team for the Classification of Haematological Neoplasies. Campo was awarded the National Research Prize 2013, an institutional award given by the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation, and a Rey Jaime 2016 Prize for Medical Research.

The new NAM members were announced in the annual meeting of the Academia and were elected by the current active members through a process that distinguishes those leading professionals in their fields and who have made important contributions to the advancement of medical science, health care and public health. Nine more professionals were also elected as new international members of the NAM together with Elías Campo.
