The first graduation of the bachelor degree in Security, offered by Institut de Seguretat Pública de Catalunya (ISPC) as affiliated center of the University of Barcelona, held the graduation ceremony in the Paranimph of the Historical Building of the UB.

The ceremony, presided by the rector of the UB, Joan Elias, together with the director of ISPC, Montserrat Royes, counted on the participation of the head of studies, Josep Baqués and the first student of this year, Abel Vázquez.

A total of thirty-six students have graduated, 25 % of them being women and 75 % of them men. About half of the students (47.2 %) entered the studies through University entrance exams. The average age of the students is 25.3.

The bachelor degree in Security started in 2014 as a new degree in the Catalan university system resulting from a project that links the university system with the business and institutional one and which comes from an initiative by the Government.

The aim of this degree is to prepare students to practice the skills related to security knowledge from a holistic perspective. The studies intend to prepare professionals with a high university level so that they can practice their activity as security managers and analysts.

The studies treat security from several approaches: from risks in crime activities to natural disasters and food and energy insecurities. Also, it does so from a transnational perspective, since risks are more and more linked to global society. Moreover, security is treated as a strategic issue in business competitiveness. In this sense, the studies focus on corporative security, going further from knowledge on public security systems.

This academic year 2018-2019, a total of 288 students have enrolled in these studies. With the development of the degree, the link to professional field in private and public areas has been reinforced, aiming to ease the practices of the students, as well as their labour market insertion. In this sense, educational cooperation agreements were signed with thirty-five companies and institutions.

The degree is structured into 240 credits, organized in four courses (two semesters each). The first course provides basic information related to social and juridical sciences; the second and third ones offer 20 mandatory subjects and all optional courses students can choose from to then course a major in corporative security or international security. Also, this degree offers tools for investigation and provides students with resources to carry out their professional task.

ISPC, which integrates the Police School and Firemen School, is consolidated as a university centre.
