Last November 16 and 17 the Second Annual LERU Rectorsʼ Assembly took place. Joan Elias, Rector of the UB, the only Spanish university member of the network, attended the meeting. During the meeting, the Director-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, Jean-Eric Paquet, presented the current state of negotiations on Horizon Europe, the next EU program on research and innovation. The Second Secretary-General of the European Union Division at the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs, Rory Montgomery, who told the attending rectors about the positioning of Ireland on the Brexit negotiations, the importance of its membership in the European Union and the impact of Brexit on research and educations in the universities.

Other topics that were treated were the fight against climate change and the important role of the research-intensive universities, the new initiatives of open access scientific publications, the European university networks, and the upcoming LERU reports on student entrepreneurship and diversity.

The next rectorsʼ assembly will take place in the University of Strasbourg, in the spring of 2019.
