Fourteen researchers of the University of Barcelona appear in the list of the most influential scientists worldwide, published by Clarivate Analytics –leading company in the innovation field-, which identifies experts that lead studies with the highest international scientific impact in several study areas.

Clarivate Analytics’ Highly Cited Researchers –the former branch dedicated to intellectual property and science in Thomson Reuters- is one of the most prestigious classifications in the international academic and scientific community. The list includes the 6,078 names of the most relevant researchers in twenty-one fields of sciences and social sciences, ranging from clinical medicine and neurosciences to agriculture, economics or the environment. A hundred and fifteen out of the 6,078 researchers work in Spanish institutions.

When working on this ranking, experts on bibliometrics in Clarivate Analytics have analysed the scientific articles that appear in the 1 % of most cited articles per field and year in Essential Science Indicators (Clarivate Analytics). In this edition, they took 130.000 articles from 900 institutions from around the globe. This international list is a key element in many world rankings within the university field, such as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as Shanghai Ranking.

One of the new items this year is the category of Cross-Field, which identifies those researchers with a great influence in several fields during the 2006-2016 period. Manel Esteller, Vicente Arroyo, Julià Panes and Emili Ros are in this category.
