On September 25, 2015, a hundred and ninety-three world leaders signed the United Nationsʼ 2030 Agenda for sustainable development: a total of seventeen goals to end with poverty, protect the planet and make human rights a reality for all people within fifteen years. Reaching these goals is not only in the hands of the governments, the private sector and civil society, but also in the hands of the universities, since they can contribute to social transformation and sustainable development through three aims: teaching, research and social commitment.

The UB is now organizing the session “The University of Barcelona and the Sustainable Development Goals: building the UB 2030 Agenda”. The meeting, open to all the UB community, will take place on Monday, February 18 at the Historical Building, and will count on the participation of the high commissioner of the SDGs, Cristina Gallach. The activity is free but there is limited capacity so previous registration via this form is required. The dateline for registrations is February 8. All attendants will receive an attendance certificate. PDI and PAS members who want to get the certificate have to apply through this link, given by Institut de Desenvolupament Professional (IDP-ICE).

The meeting aims to be a working session, which will last a morning (from 9.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.), and wants to involve the university community (students, PDI and PAS members9 in a participative process with two objectives: giving visibility to the activities that are being carried out at the UB related to the SDGs, creating future approaches, identifying resources and needs, and setting alliances with other involved actors.

The program will start at 9.30 a.m. in the Aula Magna of the Historical Building, with the welcome by the rector Joan Elias, and the vice-rector for Equal Opportunities and Social Action, Maite Vilalta, who will present the UB project to contribute to sustainable development. Afterwards, there will be a conference by the high commissioner for the 2030 Agenda, Cristina Gallach, in charge of the coordination of the activities for the United Nationsʼ SDGs in Spain. Then, there will be a debate for the attendants on what the University can do to reach the SDGs. With this aim, three working groups will be created: teaching and learning, research and innovation, and social commitment, which will include actions on equality, support, health and environment. The session will close when sharing the conclusions of each group.

This initiative wants to step forward to give visibility to the actions that are carried out in the University of Barcelona in order to fulfil the SDGs. In other phases to come, this knowledge will enable developing a strategic action plan to promote the contribution of the UB in the 2030 Agenda, and to allow the monitoring and assessment of this contribution.
