The UB commemorates the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
In 2015 the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed February 11 International Day of Women and Girls in Science. To commemorate this ephemeride, the UB has scheduled for Monday, at the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, several activities to contribute to end with the gender gap in the scientific field.

In the Clinic Campus, the Institute of Neurosciences of the UB is organizing a roundtable called “Future Perspectives for Women in Neuroscience”, which touches on the essential contributions made by women in this field, during the last three decades, in understanding the human behaviour, emotions, thinking and functioning. Five researchers from UB research groups will take part in the activity: Mercè Pallàs (Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology of Neurodegenerative Diseases), Silvia Ginés (Neurodegeneration and Synaptic Dysfunction in Huntingtonʼs Disease), Albert Giralt (Ramon y Cajal researcher in the group Physiopathology and Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases), Ruth de Diego (ICREA researcher in the Brain Mechanisms of Language Learning group), and Marc Via (Brain Lab). The roundtable will take place at 12 noon, in the room 11 of the Faculty, and it requires previous registration via this link.
At the Faculty of Physics, the Institute of Complex Systems of the UB (UBICS), together with the Equality Commission of the Faculty, are organizing the session “Pursuing a Scientific Career in Complexity”. This activity aims to promote the scientific studies in the field of complexity among young researchers. After an initial presentation, a debate will follow, divided in small debate groups, among students and researchers from UBICS. The session will take place from 1.45 p.m.to 3 p.m. in the room N06 at the Faculty of Physics. Previous registration via this link is required.
Last, the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB) and the Equality Commission of the Faculty of Physics organize the roundtable “Women in Science”. Five researchers from different fields of physics will take part: Caterina Biscari, director of ALBA Synchrotron; Esther Pascual, vice-dean of the Faculty of Physics; Cesca Figueras, lecturer of Astrophysics of the UB and president of the Spanish Society of Astronomy; M. Àngels Serrano, lecturer of Condensed Matter Physics of the UB and Sònia Estradé, lecturer of Electronic Engineering and Biomedicine at the UB, who will chair the debate. Over the course of the activity, the speakers will talk about their professional experience with gender perspective. Afterwards, they will debate on the challenges -such as the ceiling glass (of Matilde Effect)- women face in science. This activity will take place at 5 p.m., in the Aula Magna Enric Casassas at the Faculty of Physics.
