UB Internal Debate League competitions start
From February 11 to 13, the Aula Magna of the Historical Building holds the thirteenth edition of the Internal Debate League of the University of Barcelona, organized by the Debating Association of the UB (ADUB) and the Vice-Rectorʼs Office of Students and Language Policy, with the support of the Student Support Services. The League is open to all university students. The eliminatory phases will take place until February 12. The semi-finals and the final will take place in the afternoon of the 13th, and the 3rd Competition of Speeches of the University of Barcelona will take place in the afternoon.

The Debate League of the UB is a ludic and training competition in which the teams, formed by university students from different studies of the University and led by a captain, face a series of debates revolving a topical issue which is suggested by the organization. This year, a total of eight teams have registered, and they are formed by students from the faculties of Law, Economics and Business, Philosophy, Geography and History, and Mathematics and Computer Science, who will compete in eliminatory phases.
The League maintains last yearʼs mechanics and adds the variable theme in all phases. This means the topic and the position they have to stand up for -in favour or against- will be published only twenty-five minutes before the debates start. This mechanics is highly demanding and allows participants to prove their skills and talent when speaking in public in front of a jury formed by academic authorities and communication experts. The two teams with the highest score go to the finals to win the first and the second place. The winner is the team with higher communicative skills, whose participants know how to be understood and how to join perspectives and create an opinion.
The debate is an activity to improve oratory and rhetoric; it brings confidence when speaking in public and offers tools to control the language. The debate allows students to acquire and practice mediation strategies and negotiation and conflict resolution techniques.
As part of the League, the Competition of Speeches of the University of Barcelona reaches its third edition this year, and all participants from the Internal League can take part in this one too. In the qualifying phase, the topic of the speech is eligible. The best ones will step onto the next phase and then, the topic will be randomly given, taken from one of the proposed topics by the jury.
Taking part in the Vives Network University Debate League
The Internal Debate League of the UB will choose the team to represent the University of Barcleona in the 14th Vives Network University Debate League, to take place at the Abat Oliba CEU University, from April 8 to 11.
