On September 25, 2015, a hundred and ninety-three world leaders signed the United Nations 2023 Agenda for sustainable development: a total of seventeen goals to end with poverty, to protect the planet and make human rights a reality for all people within fifteen years. Reaching these objectives does not only depend on the governments, private sectors and civil society but also on the universities, which play an important role when contributing to social transformation and sustainable development, through three aims: teaching, research, and social commitment. The UB is organizing this session under this premise, on Monday, February 18, the session "The University of Barcelona and the sustainable development goals (SDG): Building the UB 2030 Agenda".

The meeting is regarded as a working session, which will last an entire morning (from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), and intends to involve the university community (students, PDI and PAS members) in a participative process with several objectives: giving visibility to activities that are carried out at the UB and are related to the SDGs, creating future approaches, and identifying resources and needs, and creating alliances with other involved actors.

The program will start at 9.30 a.m. in the Aula Magna of the Historical Building, with the welcome by the rector, Joan Elias, and the vice-rector for Equal Opportunities and Social Action, Maite Vilalta, who will present the UB project to contribute to the sustainable development. Then, Jorge Solana, advisor of the High Commissioner for the fulfilment of the SDG in Spain, will give the conference "El paper de les universitats per avançar en els ODS". In a second part, there will be the debate for attendants to show what to do from the University to reach the SDGs. With this aim, three working groups will be created: teaching and learning, research and innovation, and social commitment, which include actions of support, equality, health and environment. The session will close with the presentation of the conclusions for each group.

This initiative aims to step forward in order to give visibility to the actions carried out at the University of Barcelona to fulfil the SDG. In the upcoming phases, this knowledge will allow developing a strategic action plan to promote the UB contribution to the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda, and to allow the monitoring of the assessment of this contribution.
