Four researchers of the UB, honoured with Narcís Monturiol Medal

Researchers of the University of Barcelona Francesc Xavier Hernàndez, professor of Social Science Didactics; Mary Nash, emeritus professor of History; Jordi Torra, professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Licia Verde, ICREA researcher at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB), received the Narcís Monturiol Medal to scientific and technologic achievement on Tuesday, February 19.

Researchers of the University of Barcelona Francesc Xavier Hernàndez, professor of Social Science Didactics; Mary Nash, emeritus professor of History; Jordi Torra, professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Licia Verde, ICREA researcher at the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB), received the Narcís Monturiol Medal to scientific and technologic achievement on Tuesday, February 19.

The 23rd edition of this award distinguished nineteen people and a prestigious institution. The ceremony, which took place at the Palau de la Generalitat, was presided by the President of the Catalan Government, Quim Torra.

With his research, Francesc Xavier Hernàndez has contributed to develop didactics of history, archaeology and heritage, and to promote didactic museography. In the field of historical and archaeological research, he has generated relevant knowledge on the military history of Catalonia.

Mary Nash, honorary doctorate by the University of Granada and Rovira i Virgili University, is an expert on the history of women and gender, and author of many academic publications.

Jordi Torra is a researcher in the field of galactic astronomy and space astrometry. He studied kinematic structures such as spiral arms of the Milky Way and the Gould belt. Among his distinguished contributions to sky astrometry missions are those to the European Space Agencyʼs Gaia and Hipparcos. 

Licia Verde, doctor in Physical Sciences by the University of Edinburgh, has been awarded with the Gruber Cosmology Prize (2012) and the Nasa Group Achievement Award for her contribution to the space mission Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe. In 2018, she was awarded the National Research Prize of Generalitat de Catalunya.

The Narcís Monturiol Medal, given by Generalitat de Catalunya, honors people and entities that have contributed significantly to the development of science and technology in Catalonia.
