Fundraising in public universities is the topic of the 2nd Seminar on university funding to be organized at the UB on May 23 in the Aula Magna of the Historical Building (Gran Via, 585). The seminar will start at 9 a.m. with a speech by the rector of the UB, Joan Elias; the secretary-general of the Inter-university Council of Catalonia, Lluís Baulenas; and the general manager of the UB Oriol Escardíbul.

The first issue to treat in this seminar, the current situation of philanthropic fundraising in the European public universities, will be treated by Theo Schuyt, professor at the University of Amsterdam and president of the European Research Network on Philanthropy which gathers around 250 researchers from 25 European countries.

"After analysing public funding of universities in the first edition, last year, this year the seminar touches on philanthropic funding, which have to be more and more important, regarding the restrictions from public funding”, says Oriol Escardíbul. “It is relevant to analyse the different systems of philanthropic funding, the role of the existing legal system, the organization of the units in charge in the universities, etc.”, continues the general manager of the UB.

In the seminar, Carmen Pérez-Esparrells, from the Autonomous University of Madrid, will explain the big differences between philanthropic funding in the universities in the United States and the ones in Spain; Montserrat Casanellas, lecturer at the Department of Administrative Law, Procedural Law and Financial and Tax Law of the UB, will talk on the legal and fiscal framework of fundraising; and Manuel Palencia from Pompeu Fabra University, will talk about the difficulties to progress in these funding in Catalonia. In the afternoon, the topic of the seminar will lead to a debate with the participation of Juan Mezo (IL3-UB), Juan Salvador Pérez (Jaume I University), Núria Vilamajó (Clínic Foundation) and Joan Corominas, president of the Board of Trustees of the UB. The closing ceremony will be carried out by the secretary for University and Research at Generalitat de Catalunya, Francesc Xavier Grau.

“Fundraising, apart from getting resources, enables a lifelong link between society and the university”, notes Escardíbul, highlighting one of the aspects to be treated in the seminar. With this meeting, the University of Barcelona aims to keep leading the debate on university funding in Catalonia.
