CHARM-EU, an alliance created in January 2019

The universities that form CHARM-EU created the alliance in January 2019 after some months of work. During the press release for the presentation, which took place in January in the University of Barcelona, the rector Joan Elias explained one of the objectives of the network is to build a particular and innovating academic offering revolving around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), which were assumed by the members of the United Nations in 2015 to end up with poverty, protect the planet and guarantee prosperity. “The seventeen objectives that build up the 2030 Agenda will be a direct inspiration for the European university we want to create”, noted Rector Elias.

The name CHARM stands for the basic pillars on which the alliance is based: Challenge driven, focused on the challenges to be the base of the design; Accessible, because it will be inclusive; Research based, because it wants to move the strength of this alliance to learning; and Mobile, because it wants to make mobility a base, and provide a great amount of students, lecturers and staff with it.

The aim of CHARM-EU, countersigned by the UB Governing Council and signed by all the universities of the alliance, highlights studentsʼ empowerment so that they become “European citizens” able to bring solutions to global challenges, many of these related to the SDG. Therefore, there will be an academic offering that will cover all the university programs on the long run, based on the European values of freedom, autonomy and respect for human rights.

Among the differential features are the power given to students to organize their syllabus and choose the learning modules according to their interests and social needs. These blocs will be coursed in the different universities that build up the network, mainly online, and will use innovative and digitally intensive learning strategies.
