The University of Barcelona works on one of the problems many students from outside the city have to face: accommodation. For this reason, the new Aleu Residence, joins the UB accommodation offer, with two residential colleges and the affiliated and agreement private offer with the University.

The University of Barcelona works on one of the problems many students from outside the city have to face: accommodation. For this reason, the new Aleu Residence, joins the UB accommodation offer, with two residential colleges and the affiliated and agreement private offer with the University.

The new building has room for more than 500 students and is the biggest residence hall of the Catalan city with such features. It was launched by the University of Barcelona and the group of university residences Nexo Residencias and GSA España.

The residence is named after Dolors Aleu, the first woman graduated in Medicine at the UB and in Spain. The University of Barcelona wants to honor the role of this pioneer women who was born in Barcelona in 1857. Dr Aleu was interested in our world and activist regarding the role of the woman. The name of the residence wants to share Dolors Aleuʼs values with all the students. 

The new residence is located in the Barcelona Knowledge Campus, and has a 19,000 square meter surface and offers local and foreign students more than 500 places of accommodation. Also, it will have a restaurant, gym, co-working spaces, study room, terraces, parking for bikes, motorbikes and cars, and a wide program of cultural and leisure activities.

State-of-the-art residence

The Aleu Residence was designed by the team Blanch + Conca Arquitectura (BCA), and the work is carried out by the company VOPI4. With a B energy rating, several eco-efficiency elements and energy savings plan, the UB opts for one of its strategy objectives: respect for the environment and its sustainability.

The building has a main body of twelve floors, where most of the rooms are, and a longitudinal structure of four floors, to hold common areas, as well as leisure areas such as the gym, game rooms, restaurant, laundry room, a 400-square meter place for file uses of the UB and 1,550 square meters for a study room and co-working spaces, only for UB students and those living in the residence.

The students living in the new residence will have individual rooms, fully furnished, with private bathroom and own air conditioning. In an international environment, they will receive customized attention and will access these spaces with an electronic key. There are cleaning services and bed sheets and towels are changed weekly. There is Internet all over the building. Also, they can join all activities and social acts from the Go Plan, which offers initiatives on sports, culture, personal and professional growth, charity and environment-friendly ones.

Other UB accommodation offers

The new Aleu Resicence joins a wide and varied accommodation offering of the UB, which fulfils its objective of assisting the different needs of the students. In this offer, there are two residence colleges, which are a differential feature of the UB, compared to other Catalan universities. At the moment, the Col·legi Major Penyafort-Montserrat-Llull and the Col·legi Major Sant Jordi offer 905 places. The UB has affiliated major colleges, offering 659 places. The range is extended with fourteen private university residences which have an agreement with the university, and offer a total of 2,720 places together. Moreover, there are entities that help students with their search for accommodation, such as the program Viure i Conviure, and Barcelona University Centre (BCU). The approximate total of 4,300 places -within the UB offering, the affiliated private and agreement offers- are the UB bet for a Barcelona as university city. The students of the University can choose the accommodation that fits better their needs and preferences.
