Antoni Trilla, professor of Public Health, took office as new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in a ceremony on July 19. Trilla is replacing Professor Francesc Cardellach.

Other members took office as new members of de Deanʼs team in the ceremony: Itziar de Lecuona, as secretary of the Faculty in the Clinic Campus; Santiago Ambrosio, as secretary of the Faculty in the Bellvitge Campus; Ricard Cervera, as academic vice-dean of Bachelor Degrees and International Relations; Javier Ariza, as academic vice-dean; M Pilar Delgado as vice-dean of the UFR Nursing-Bellvitge; José Luis Rosa, as vice-dean of Research (Bellvitge Campus); Josep M Ustrell, as vice-dean of the UFR Dentistry-Bellvitge, and Bladiri Prats, as director of the UFR in Podiatry.

Antoni Trilla, professor of Public Health, took office as new Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in a ceremony on July 19. Trilla is replacing Professor Francesc Cardellach.

Trilla highlighted that “the well done job from all people in assistance, teaching and research, brought the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB to be the top in Spain and one of the top faculties in the EU in different international rankings published by independent bodies”. He also noted that PDI and PAS in the Faculty aim to work “to offer a better services to the students”.

The new team, he said, “will work and collaborate with health institutions and professional schools in everything we can contribute to reach the profile of graduates to adapt to what society demands regarding the different health professions, which constitutes the real challenge of any faculty of medicine”.

Regarding his objectives, Trilla said: “We have many challenges, such as showing our ability to introduce necessary changes (new teaching technologies, including virtual reality and simulation), planning generational succession in PDI and PAS, reinforcing the respect to gender equality and fight against any kind of discrimination, finding formulas for home-work balance, and having proper spaces and manage these in the best way”. Also, he stressed he wants the Faculty to be “leading in the fight against climate change, energetically sustainable and in line with respect and improvement of the environment”. The new dean noted: “We want to be more open to our surrounding society, listen to people and make them participants in our dreams, problems and projects”.

The motto of our Univiersity -“Libertas perfundet omnia luce”- has to help us having a global view, more realist and supporting with the world and our society in particular”, noted Trilla, who stressed that “at the Faculty, we have to work and act under high ethical standards, transparency and performance”.

Collaboration and support among the students, the polite and friendly treatment with everyone and learning all the values of health professionalism are “key objectives and basic requirements” to enjoy the many opportunities offered at the Faculty. The dean concluded: “We are committed to train good people, excellent health professionals”.

Antoni Trilla (Barcelona, 1956) is a professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the Department of Medicine and has been academic vice-dean at the Faculty since 2013. He is the head of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, research lecturer at the Barcelona Institute for Global Research and member of the Governing Board of the Col·legi de Metges de Barcelona (School of Medicine). Graduated at the UB and with a doctorate from the same university, he is an expert on internal and preventive medicine and public health. Among other awards, he received Josep Trueta Medal to health merit given by the Catalan Government, the Big Vang Medal to scientific communication and the Professional Excellence Prize from Col·legi de Metges. In 2018 he received the V Award of the Doctorsʼ Senate and Board of Trustees of the UB to the best scientific and humanistic dissemination activities. Among his research lines are the prevention and control of infections related to health care; influenza, vaccines and vaccination, and procedures for isolation and control of highly communicable diseases.

In the ceremony on July 19, other people took office: José Francisco García, lecturer from the Department of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Chemistry, as director of the Water Research Institute (IdRA), replacing Javier Martín Vide, professor from the Department of Geography.

Also, Cristina González, professor of Private Law, took office as director of the Legal Research Institute (TransJus), replacing Juli Ponce, professor from the Department of Administrative Law, Procedural Law and Financial and Tax Law.
