Eduard Garrabou, the student with the highest score in the university entrance exams (PAU) in Catalonia, chose the UB to study the dual degree on Mathematics and Physics. “Several people talked wonders about the University, from high school teachers who studied here to people I know who are currently studying here”, notes Eduard. Javier Aguada, who will start next year at the UB with the highest admission mark (results from high school and PAU qualifications), has enrolled in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature. In his case, he received positive comments from people who study at the Faculty, but the academic offering of the UB includes another bachelor degree he is interested in and the chance to validate subjects between these studies. Both Eduard and Havier are part of the 313 students entering the UB with an exceptional mark, over 13 out of 14 as the highest mark. These figures of excellent students increased compared to the 293 students from last year, and more if compared to the 255 from two years ago.

Eduard choosing Mathematics and Physics and Javier choosing Literary Theory and Comparative Literature is an example of how these students with brilliant records are distributed around all faculties and fields: up to 42 degrees will receive students with a score over 13 from the 92 degrees that are offered in the UB. This is a wider range of studies compared to last year, when these were 35 out of 91 degrees. The difference is that Eduard and Javier are boys: about 67.73% of these excellent students the UB will receive are girls. Actually, these figures are higher than the percentage of women in the total of students who chose the UB as first option: 65%. That is, if most of the next year students at the UB are women, these trend is even more stressed if we specifically refer to the group of excellent students.

Maria Revilla is another of these students. In her case, she chose Medicine, her fatherʼs profession, who studied in the UB Clinic Campus. “My father remembers it as one of the best times of his life”, says Maria, who saw that graduates from this campus are normally “among the top ones in MIR”. Albert Boladeras, second top mark in PAU in Catalonia, will study Medicine in the Clinic Campus. He considered the campus for being a leading one: “Itʼs at the same level as the Imperial College, Cambridge, Yale and the University of California”, he says. Actually, Albert says he considered studying abroad before choosing the UB and he knows he wants to try and study abroad too: “The second I have the chance to do so, I will try to study in the United Kingdom, or even the United States or Canada”.

These students who will enter the University with great marks have their own expectations on the new stage of their life. Diego Hernández, who will study the dual degree on Mathematics and Computer Engineering, has been warned it will be difficult. “I wanted to do something related to mathematics or computer science. When looking at the studies, I saw this one, and I said: ʻPerfect! If it gets hard, tough luck, I will work harderʼ”, he says. “Also, in the educational fair “Saló de lʼEnsenyament” I talked to a student who was coursing the dual degree and he said it can be done if you like what you do and if you are willing to study”, he adds.

Apart from academic training, these new UB students hope to undergo a great personal experience. “I would like to find supporting classmates so we help each other”, says Diego. And Albert Boladeras concluded: “I am very focused on the studies, but I want to live new experiences, I want to find myself, make friends and live new things”.
