According to the new edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), known as the Shanghai Ranking, the UB is the only university in Spain listed among the top 200 universities worldwide according to the criteria set by this prestigious ranking. ARWU analyses about 1,800 universities from around the world and publishes the ranking on the top 1,000. Also, the UB holds the position as the top university of Spain the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), published in July.

Once more, the world ranking is led by American universities. The first positions are held by Harvard and Stanford, while Cambridge is listed as third. A total of thirteen Spanish centers are listed among the top 500 universities worldwide. The Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Complutense University of Madrid and Pompeu Fabra University are listed in the 301-400 segments.

The great scientific performance of the UB in indexed articles and high level publications in Nature and Science is a determining factor regarding the position the UB holds. The Shanghai Ranking is created with the analysis of bibliometric data in six indicators: relevant awards (Nobel, Fields medal) obtained by students and teaching staff, the most cited researchers in the 21 areas determined by Thomson ISI, the published articles in Nature and Science, recorded articles in the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE), and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and last, the academic performance regarding the dimensions of the institution.

This year the methodology to calculate the indicator of the most cited researchers (Clarivate Analytics-Highly Cited Researchers) has changed, and they included the category Cross-Field in order to include influential researchers in several disciplines and value multidisciplinary. This methodological change has had an impact on position changes in this yearʼs ranking. More information is available in this link.

In the CWUR ranking, the UB holds the 129th position worldwide. The following Spanish universities in this ranking are UAB (195), and the Complutense University of Madrid (249).
