The UB Sociology professor Marta Soler, was appointed president of the European Sociological Association during the conference of the entity, which took place in Manchester.

Marta Soler, with a doctorate from Harvard University, is the director of the CREA research center of the University of Barcelona. She is now the president of the Catalan Sociological Association and member of the executive committee of the European Alliance for Social Sciences and Humanities. She participates actively in several research activities in sociological associations such as the International Sociological Association. During the years 2014-2016 she was the first researcher on social sciences to be member of the ORCID board (Open Researcher and Contributor ID).

Her research activity includes the analysis of communicative events, with application to the study of inequality and gender violence. She is now the principal researcher of the H2020 SOLIDUS project to analyse solidarity acts during the crisis in Europe. She has been involved in the coordination of the IMPACT-EV project, on the evaluation of scientific, politic and social impact of research. She has recently published the book Achieving Social Impact. Sociology in the public sphere (Springer).

 

Catalonia Sociology Award

Moreover, UB sociology professor Ramon Flecha got the Premi Catalunya de Sociologya (Catalonia Sociology Award) this year for the international relevance and social impact of his academic contributions. The award ceremony will take place on September 17 in the headquarter of the Institute for Catalan Studies. Ramon Flecha, founder of CREA, contributed with his research to several fields of sociology; in particular, he worked on shaping theories and practices that overcome social inequalities. He published together with relevant authors such as Touraine, Castells and Freire, among others, and his work has been published into twelve different languages.
