On September 12, the renewal of the collaboration agreement of the UB-SEMI-Menarini Internal Medicine Chair was signed, between the University of Barcelona, the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) and the Menarini Group. The event was presided over by the rector of the UB, Joan Elias; the president of SEMI, Ricardo Gómez Huelgas, and the director-general of the Menarini Group, Ignacio González Casteleiro. This is the end of a long period of time that has redesigned and updated a teaching platform supporting a program of master’s degrees and accredited courses on internal medicine. The main objective of the agreement is to strengthen and universalize the online training between Spain and Latin America in the fields that require a major scientific update to improve health care.

The UB-SEMI-Menarini Internal Medicine Chair, led by the UB lecturer and researcher Josep Maria Nicolás, is the result of almost ten years of work that meant the realization of more than twelve master degrees on updating and several university expert courses, which counted on more than 350 lecturers and provided an academic degree to more than 5,000 doctors in Spain and Latin America. This training intends to provide interested professionals with an improvement and update of the theory and practical knowledge needed in clinical practice.

The renewal of the agreement goes for an integration and expansion with the universities and societies of internal medicine in Latin America. Also, it will use distance learning and modern technologies on e-learning.

Rector Joan Elias said the agreement between the University of Barcelona, SEMI and Menarini Group is a “model” agreement and highlighted the importance of internal medicine in current times. Then, Ricardo Gómez, president of SEMI, praised the “style” of Menarini Group when carrying out the collaboration during this time, and regarding the University o fBarcelona, he highlighted the prestige of the institution. According to Ignacio González, director-general of the Menarini Group, “the renewal of this Chair proves the commitment of the company with the training aimed at health professionals for almost thirty years. It is also noteworthy that three entities such as the UB, SEMI and Menarini have joined to promote and improve the training for health professionals”.

During the next academic year, four master degrees on the fields of diabetes, chronic diseases and care for the elderly, infectious diseases and self-immune diseases –are expected to be offered. These programs are aimed at an initial collective of more than 1,000 doctors, to be tutored by 200 lecturers from several working groups from SEMI and other Latin American universities.
