On Tuesday, October 8, at 12 noon, the Paranimph of the Historical Building will hold the opening ceremony for the academic year 2019/2020. This yearʼs opening lecture, titled “Ethics as an essential factor in academic life”, will be given by Professor Norbert Bilbeny, from the Faculty of Philosophy. Other participants in this event will be the rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias, the minister for Enterprise and Knowledge of the Catalan Government, M. Àngels Chacón, i el president del Consell Social de la UB, Joan Corominas.

On Tuesday, October 8, at 12 noon, the Paranimph of the Historical Building will hold the opening ceremony for the academic year 2019/2020. This yearʼs opening lecture, titled “Ethics as an essential factor in academic life”, will be given by Professor Norbert Bilbeny, from the Faculty of Philosophy. Other participants in this event will be the rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias, the minister for Enterprise and Knowledge of the Catalan Government, M. Àngels Chacón, i el president del Consell Social de la UB, Joan Corominas.

Belén Noguera, the secretary-general, will start the ceremony presenting the annual report of the academic year 2018/2019. Then, Professor Bilbeny will give the opening lecture on the importance of ethics in the university field, which values concepts such as veracity, reputation, credit and prestige.

During the ceremony, the awards to teaching quality corresponding to 2018-2019 will be given, as well as the medals of the University of Barcelona to the teaching and research staff and the administration and services staff who retired last academic year.

Norbert Bilbeny i García (Barcelona, 1953) has been professor of Ethics at the University of Barcelona since 1990. He was the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy from 2011 to 2014 and has been the president of the Ethics Committee of the UB since 2017. He directs the Masterʼs degree in Citizenship and Human Rights, and has been visiting lecturer in other universities around the world. His fields of expertize are intercultural issues, ethics of citizenship and cosmopolitism. A usual collaborator in the media, he is also the author of many books in Catalan and Spanish. He was awarded the Josep Pla Prize in 1984 for Papers contra la cinta magnètica, and Anagrama dʼassaig in 1987 for La revolución en la ética. Hábitos y creencias en la sociedad digital. He has published, among others, Carta a un estudiant dʼhumanitats (Ara Llibres, 2005), Ética intercultural (Plaza y Valdés, 2012), and Filosofia per sortir de casa (Columna Edicions, 2019).
