Six institutions with about a hundred distinguished researchers in the field of complete multilayer networks, among which is the UB, have gathered to create AccelNet-Multinet, a specialized network of this research field. Its aim is to conduct international exchanges, meetings and joint research projects.

The scientific institutes of the Northeastern Univesity and the University of Indiana take part in the network together with four European partners: the UB, ISI Foundation (Italy), the Central European University (Hungary and Austria), and the Centre for Theoretical Physics (France). The network has a budget of 1.9 million euros for five years and it is aimed at PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who will be able to make research stays in one of the participating centers.

“These are long stays and reinforce collaborations among research groups, plus the students can use these stays to obtain international doctoral degrees”, says Albert Díaz-Guilera, director of UBICS, the UB research institute representing research in this field and representing the UB in this network.

AccelNet-Multinet is an international network focused on multilayer complex systems, that is, systems where individual networks interact with others, which is important in systems such as infrastructure networks and the relation between energy and internet networks, social and multilayer communication networks, the brain and even biological cell networks.

For instance, one of the projects to be part of this network is to study the dynamics and structure of the so-called social multiplex, the social interaction network produced through several means (such as the phone, Twitter, Facebook, and so on), and the network of multilevel contacts between people (school, home, working spaces, etc.), which help predicting and controlling the spreading of rumours, news and epidemics.
