The UB Emeritus Professor Salvador Giner died on Saturday, October 19. Distinguished figure in sociology in Catalonia, he was the president of the Institute for Catalan Studies from 2005 to 2013.

The UB Emeritus Professor Salvador Giner died on Saturday, October 19. Distinguished figure in sociology in Catalonia, he was the president of the Institute for Catalan Studies from 2005 to 2013.

Graduated in Sociology and with a PhD from the University of Chicago, graduated in Law at UAB, and with his postgraduate studies at the University of Koln, Giner was awarded Saint Georgeʼs Cross given by the Catalan Government in 1995. He served as lecturer, head of department and professor at the universities of Cambridge (Kingʼs College), Reading, Lancaster and West London (Brunel) from 1965 to 1989, as well as visiting instructor at the University of Rome, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, the universities of Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Buenos Aires, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Madrid, and others. He was also the co-founder and president of the Catalan Association of Sociology, affiliated at the European Sociological Association. In 2006, he received the National Sociology and Political Science Award.

Writer and advisor at Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, he is the author of the manual Sociologia, which counts on several editions and has been translated into several languages. He is also co-author of La cultura catalana: el sagrat i el profà (co-author) and the essay book Comunió, domini, innovació. He has published in other languages Contemporary Europe (vol I and II), Mass society (two editions), Historia del pensamiento social (several editions), Teoría social clásica (two editions), Teoría sociological contemporánea. He is also the author of the book El futur del capitalisme (Edicion 62, 2011) and El futur de la religió; fe, humanisme i raó (Herder, 2017).
