Doctor Mashala will carry out a research on dental and craniomaxillofacial pathologies in children, through the comparison between European populations and Eastern African populations.

Doctor Mashalaʼs stay will be supervised by Jaume Miranda, lecturer from the Department of Odontostomatology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (Bellvitge campus), and doctors Lluís Brunet and Alejandro Rivera, from Hospital SAnt Joan de Déu. Elias Mashala is a researcher from the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMU) and is working on his doctoral thesis, supervised by Jaume Miranda. The oral examination will take place at the UB.

Mashalaʼs internship is framed in a broader context than that of the UB regarding dental health in Africa. The UB and KCMU have a collaboration memorandum, in which there is a project of the University of Barcelona to collaborate to launch a degree in Dentistry in this African center. The figure of these graduates is essential in areas far from the urban center, where prevention tasks and certain treatments such as fillings and exodontias can be carried out. At the moment, Tanzania, which has one only Faculty of Dentistry in Dar-Es-Salam, needs many of these professionals.
