Campus de les Arts, a project led by the University of Barcelona which gathers about twenty high education centers on arts of Catalonia, organizes, from the 29th to the 30th of November, its first international conference, under the title “Indisciplines”. This meeting, carried out with the support from the Vice-rector’s Office for Arts, Culture and Heritage of the UB, results from the will to explore hybrid areas of research carried out from the field of the arts. The activities will be conducted in two places: the Historical Building of the UB and the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC). Registrations are open until the 22nd of November, in this link. Moreover, all members of the UB community can use a discount in the registration, which they can get by sending an email to info@campusdelesart.org.

“Indisciplines” is aimed at researchers and creators who wish to reflect on creative ways of making, understanding, and hybridize artistic research processes in different areas, beyond traditional paradigms. This is why the conference is named after indiscipline, regarded as a tool to provoke which refers to research and the ability of arts to generate thoughts.

Among the speakers are distinguished figures such as the researcher and artist Mika Elo (University of the Arts of Helsinki), and the performer and artist Alexandra Murray-Leslie (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), co-founder of the electropop band Chicks on Speed. Together with the other speeches, there will be more than twenty-five research projects –some with a performance or exhibition image- with the participation of researchers from seven different countries.

Program

On Thursday, 28th of November, at 4 p.m., the Aula Magna of the Historical Building of the UB, will hold the opening session. It will be carried out by Mika Elo, distinguished expert on artistic research, who will give the conference “Ecologies of Artistic Research Practice”, in which he will treat some aspects from Research Pavilion #3 —his most recent project- presented in the last Venice Biennale.

Academic sessions will continue on the 28th and 29th of November in the Aula Magna and the Paranimph of the Historical Building of the UB, and will take place at the ESMUC Aula Orquestra on the 30th of November. The UB will be represented by the lecturers Antonio Gonzalo, Diego Marchante and Martí Ruiz, from the Department of Visual Arts and Design, and Bibiana Crespo, Joan Miquel Porquer, Eulàlia Grau and José Antonio Asensio, from the Department of Arts and Conservation and Restoration of the UB.

In addition to these academic sessions, on Friday, November 29, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., ESMUC will offer a free and open exhibition of projects from some of the centers that build up the Campus de les Arts. This session, under the title “PASSADES”, includes music performances, exhibitions, and workshops, so as to broaden the current view of artistic research in Catalonia. As part of this activity, the UB lecturer Pilar Rosado will present the exhibition”Mnemòsyne 2.0: Cartografies computacionals de la memòria visual”. This will not be the only exhibition by the UB to be seen at ESMUC. The lecturer Martí Ruiz, from the Laboratory of Sound Art of the UB, will present an exhibition of Baschet sound sculptures. Both exhibitions will be available on the 29th and 30th of November.

The conference “Indisciplines” ends on the 30th of November at 12.30 noon, in ESMUC, with the performance by Alexandra Murray-Leslie, titled “Gesamtkunstwerk: Thinking Through Making and Performing (computer enhanced footwear prototypes)”.

Campus de les Arts: artístic research and training

Led by the UB, the Campus de les Arts is a project that results from a collaboration between twenty higher education centers of arts in Catalonia, dedicated to the fields of music, theatre, dance, cinema and audiovisuals, conservation and restoration, visual arts, design and fashion. The project contributes to build up a debate and action frame shared between these centers, with artistic research and related resources at the core of it, together with higher studies, pedagogy and knowledge transfer.

The Campus de les Arts includes the nineteen higher education centers dedicated to the arts in Catalonia. These institutions include a total of 8,000 students: the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UB, the University School of Cinema and Visual Communication of Catalonia (ESCAC) –UB affiliated center- , Eina and Massana schools (UAB), Elisava (UPF), ESDi (URL), ERAM (UdG), BAU (UVic-UCC), the degrees of Arts and Humanities of UOC, the Theatre Institute (Barcelona Provincial Council), and the School of Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage of Catalonia (ESCRBCC), the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC) and the School of Design and Visual Arts of Catalonia (ESDAP), the last three from the Catalan Government. Other accredited centers by Generalitat and AQU are the Liceu Conservatory, the Taller de Músics, the School of Music Jam Session, the Eòlia Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, Fashion School Felicidad Dulce, from LCI network, and the Barcelona School of Design (IED).

The creation of the Campus de les Arts is in the line of the proposals by the National Council of Culture and Arts (CoNCA), and has the participation of the Catalan Government and the Barcelona City Council.
