The team Sentit Comú wins the 13th Internal Debate League of the UB
Is the European Union beneficial? This was the topic for the finalists of the 13th Internal Debate League of the University of Barcelona, which was held on February 13, in the Aula Magna of the Historical Building. It was the final session of a competition which, after three days of debates, gathered around twenty students from different faculties of the UB.

The team Sentit Comú, formed by the students Gustavo Gómes de Oliveira (Economics and Business) and Andreu Amengual Tugores (Pharmacy), won the team Joe Debato, formed by Xavier Colet i Guitert and Martí Rubio Estrada (students of the dual degree on Mathematics and Computer Engineering). The latter defended a positioning in favour, and the former, against it. The jury highlighted the participation of Xavier Colet i Guitert, with the award to the best orator, and Fran Cano Munt (student of Law) with the award to the best young promise.
The honorary jury for the final debate was presided by the vice-rector for Students and Language Policy, Mercè Puig, together with Belén Guarner and Georgina Rim, members of the Debating Association of the UB (ADUB), and Julio Herreros and Edward Bernal, friends from the association and colleagues from the universities of Murcia and Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, respectively.
During the upcoming days, the organization will select, among the finalists, the students to represent the UB in the 14th University Debate League of Vives Network, to take place in Abat Oliva CEU University from April 8 to 11, and where they will compete with teams from the other Catalan universities.
Internal Debate League of the UB
For thirteen years the Debating Association of the University and the Vice-Rectorʼs Office for Students and Language Policy, with the support of the Student Support Services, have organized the Internal Debate League of the UB. This is a training and playful competition in which teams, formed by university students from different studies of the UB and led by a captain, face, according to a competition calendar, a series of debates on a current topic proposed by the organization. This practice is an activity to improve oratory and rhetoric when speaking in public and offers tools to control language. The debate allows students to acquire and practice mediation strategies and techniques of negotiation and conflict resolution. It all makes this activity, accredited with an ECTS credit, to have a high training potential.
For the third year in a row, as part of the League, the Speech Competition of the University of Barcelona was held, won by Xavier Colet i Guitert with the speech “Haz una pelicula de tu vida antes de morir”.
