The UB takes part in the International Archives Week
This year too, the University of Barcelona, through the Unit Records and Archives, joins the world commemoration of the International Archives Week, which takes place from June 8 to 14. Under the motto “Empowering knowledge societies”, the International Archives Week wants to highlight the role of professionals of records and archive management in the 21st century, who provide solutions for the challenges in new technologies and imperatives of sustainability and reliability regarding threats such as the climate change, misinformation and fake news.
This year too, the University of Barcelona, through the Unit Records and Archives, joins the world commemoration of the International Archives Week, which takes place from June 8 to 14. Under the motto “Empowering knowledge societies”, the International Archives Week wants to highlight the role of professionals of records and archive management in the 21st century, who provide solutions for the challenges in new technologies and imperatives of sustainability and reliability regarding threats such as the climate change, misinformation and fake news.
In previous editions, the activities of the Historical Archive of the UB and intermediate files were face-to-face activities, such as the Open Day to see the Historical Archive and record samples for each of the archives. This year, due to the restrictions regarding presential activities because of the COVID-19 health alarm, these will take place online. The unit of Records and Archives of the UB created the website of International Archives Week 2020, which collects materials to see this role of the records and archives.
Moreover, the International Council on Archives (ICA), launched a world map of online archives, with all the available records online and where the unit of Records and Archives of the UB appears too.
Another initiative by ICA to which the UB joined is the publication of a manifesto on the role of archives regarding the COVID-19 crisis: "COVID-19: The duty to document does not cease in a crisis, it becomes more essential”. This manifesto, available in the ICA website in English and French, has been translated into Catalan by the unit of Records and Archives of the UB: "COVID-19: El deure de documentar no cessa en una crisi, sinó que es fa més essencial”.
The International Archives Week is held worldwide on the occasion of the founding of the UNESCO International Council on Archives, on June 9, 1948. The aim of this ephemerid is to tell the main role of the archives as guarantees of security and transparency of the actions of the administration, as promotes of preservation of historical memory and protectors of citizensʼ rights to access information and knowledge, as stated in the Universal Declaration on Archives, approved of by the UNESCO during its 36th General Conference in Paris, on November 10, 2011.
