Two UB professors receive the Narcís Monturiol Medal
Professors Manel Esteller and Josep Samitier, from the University of Barcelona, were awarded the Narcís Monturiol Medal 2020 to scientific and technological merit. The Catalan Government gave these awards, instituted in 1982, to ten researchers from the Catalan educational system. The Narcís Monturiol Plaque, which honours an institution of the country, has been awarded to the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO).

Manel Esteller i Badosa is a professor at the Department of Physiological Sciences at the UB. Holding a doctorate in Medicine by the Unievrsity of Barcelona, he was trained in the University Hospital of Vall dʼHebron, in the John Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore, USA), and the National Research Centre of Oncology (CNIO). He came back to Catalonia as the director of the Epigenetics and Cancer Biology Program at IDIBELL. He is now ICREA researcher and leads the research line of Epigenetics of Cancer at the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), center he also directs. Esteller put epigenetics at the forefront of biomedicine.
Josep Samitier i Martís is a professor at the Department of Electronic and Biomedical Engineering of the University of Barcelona. Director of the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), he is member of the Institute for Catalan Studies and founding member of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT-Health). Promoter of the nanobioengineering through the Research Group on Nanoengineering at IBEC, he also coordinates the Spanish Platform of Nanomedicine (NANOMED Spain). In 2008, he was acting rector of the UB.
