The Vives Network High School Debate League will take place online this academic year 2020/2021, in order to guarantee the safety of the participants and maintain the spirit and values of the competition. In this edition, the participants have to debate on the question “Is the global growth of economy compatible with the respect for the environment?”. The Vives Network High School Debate League will take place online this academic year 2020/2021, in order to guarantee the safety of the participants and maintain the spirit and values of the competition. In this edition, the participants have to debate on the question “Is the global growth of economy compatible with the respect for the environment?”. The dates for pre-registrations are from October 20 to November 12, 2020.
 

The local classifying phases, to be carried out online among the registered centers in a university, will take place between February and Mmarch 2021. This year, each of the 15 universities that organize the local phases will hold a maximum of five groups. In the final phase, to take place from April 13 to 23, 2021, the classified teams will compete representing the university of reference where they have won before.

In this 2020/2021 edition, the Debate League will adopt to an online format. Therefore, as stated in the competition rules, all debates, in local and final phases, will take place in online rooms. These will last a maximum of sixteen minutes and will be divided into 2-minute speaking turns.

In the local phase, every participating team will carry out four debates in one morning. The winners of each local phase will have to participate in four more debates during the final phase of the competition. The teams have to be formed by a group of between two and eight students, apart from the captain, and there will be two speakers per debate.

The Vives Network High School Debate is aimed at students aged between 15 and 18, coursing their 4th year of high school (ESO, Batxillerat) or vocational training courses. Participation is open to students from all Catalan-speaking areas, from Franja de Ponent to Valencia, Catalonia and North Catalonia, Balearic Islands, Andorra and Sardinia. The aim of the competition is to improve the speaking skills of the participants and ti promote the acquisition of cross-sectional competences, such as confidence, group work, creativity, documentation, analysis, building a speech and planning decision-taking. Also, the League provides the teaching staff with a teaching innovation tool and creates a place for collaboration between the secondary and upper secondary education levels.

 

Organized by the University Vives Network and Escola Valenciana in Valencia, the High School Debate League counts on the support from the Catalan Government, the Valencian Government and the Govern of Andorra. The Valencian Academy of Language, the Institute for Catalan Studies and Valencia City Council collaborate in it, apart from several town councils such as those in Castellón, Guadassuar, Mataró, Olot, Roses, Salt, Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Terrassa.
