Funds will be used for a project on the detection of asymptomatic and presymptomatic carriers at the UB

The funds raised by this yearʼs solidary basket will be entirely used on the research project “Help us prevent new outbreaks: finding asymptomatic carriers”, which aims to conduct a cross-sectional screening study of the SARS-CoV-2 infection in a representative sample of people from the university community. Therefore, using PCR tests and serological studies, it aims to determine the incidence of active infection and seroprevalence for coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in the UB community.

The study will be conducted on a representative and proportional population of 5,000 people from the university community, in order to identify, through the PCR technique and serological studies, potential asymptomatic or presymptomatic active infected people by SARS-CoV-2.

The detection of asymptomatic and presymptomatic carriers in the University should improve the knowledge on the epidemiology of the disease in the university context, especially because it will enable the detection of cases among young university population, who are not usually detected. From the health perspective, positive cases of coronavirus will enter the standard monitoring, isolation and disease management circuit, set by the Department of Health of the Catalan Government.

A six-year-old solidary project

The first edition of the Solidary basket raised 1,838 €, used for a project that was promoted and managed by UB Solidarity Foundation, on the social and work placement and promotion of interculturality though urban and local agriculture. Specifically, the funds were used to launch a pre-work placement initiative for fifteen young people in Santa Coloma de Gramenet, under social exclusion risk, through a training in crops in urban areas.

The second edition of the Solidary basket raised 4,274 €, used in La Marató de TV·, dedicated to the stroke and traumatic spinal cord and brain injuries. The money funded biomedical research projects that were selected by La Marató Foundation.

The following year, the basket raised 4,684 €, used in the program Hospital Amic, from Sant Joan de Déuʼs social work. The money improved the experience of hospitalized children through several activities (hospital clowns, art-therapy, workshops, musicotherapy, singing workshops, volunteering and interventions with dogs).

The fourth edition raised 5,314€, used on Sant Joan de Déuʼs social work, specially on a project to improve the diagnostic and rehabilitation of children with brain paralysis. The main objective of the project was to develop a support platform for the cognitive diagnostic of patients with a motor disorder.

In 2019, the basket raised 3,496€, used on the UB support programme for refugees and people from conflict areas, coordinated by the UB Solidarity Foundation. The main objective was to promote the access to higher education for refugees.
