This Thursday, the first of the two concerts of this yearʼs Els Vespres dʼHivern took place. The singer, pianist and songwriter from Sabadell, Lu Rois, offered an intimist, sweet and delicate concert in the Paranimph, which was not full as other times due to the pandemic restrictions. The room capacity was reduced in order to fulfil all health protocols, and the seventy people who got their invitations were happily waiting for the concert to begin. Willing to defend, once more, that culture is safe and necessary, the organization decided to maintain the cycle but going for a blended model (face-to-face and online) so that the loyal audience of Els Vespres could see the performance, albeit at home, through the UBtv live streaming.

The rector, Joan Guàrdia, did not miss the chance to enjoy Els Vespres. Before the concert, the vice-rector for Heritage and Cultural Activities, Agustí Alcoberro, highlighted the importance of the UB “putting faith in all kinds of music and showing young talents”. He also said this edition will continue even if it has to be in small gatherings “to maintain the flame and defend, from the university field, music as a cultural place”.

The artistic director of the cycle, Mireia Madroñero, noted that the organization does not want to leave Els Vespres behind: “Going ahead with this cycle, despite the pandemic, is moving because it is a unique opportunity to enjoy modern music, in this unique place, and opening the doors of the Paranimph to people who might not know about it”.

Lu Rois, together with the musician Santi Careta, presented her third album, Microcosmos, to an audience eager to enjoy live music. Guided by initiation and discovery, she offered the albumʼs songs, which revolve around maternity in all its ways. According to her, “the album results from the lived experience like a light that cracks in the middle of a dark background; it is about using this light that emanates in the middle of a shock and to understand it as a chance”. There was a VIP person among the audience: his son. The artist built a delicate and close concert in which she combined songs with brief introductions and quotes by Federico García Lorca and Joan Salvat Papasseit, among others.

“The biggest love of all is about how far maternity can shock a couple, at least it was like this in my case, and I was not told about it, it was a surprise”, said the artist. Candor was very moving, a song Lu dedicated to her beloved grandmother Mercedes and the existing bond between her and her son. “In the current situation, every concert is a gift and you do not know if you will ever perform it. This is why I am enjoying this more than ever, even if we lose this direct contact with the audience after the concert, as a result from the pandemic and the safety distances”, noted the singer when saying goodbye to the audience, who cheered her.

Anna Andreu will present her album Els mals costums on Thursday, February 18

This yearʼs poster of Els Vespres dʼHivern includes a concert by Anna Andreu, who will perform on February 18, at 8 p.m. in the Paranimph of the Historical Building. The co-leader of the band Cálido Home will debut as a solo singer, together with Marina Arrufat playing the drums, with the album Els mals costums, a project full of warmth and magic, precious lyrics and beautiful melodies. The album has been well received among the audience and the critiques guarantee its solidity and aplomb are surprising too. Invitations will be available on February 11, and invitation reservations for the concerts in the Paranimph and previous registration for online concerts have to be made in the website of Els Vespres.

The cycle is organized by the Unit of Corporate Image and Publicity of the UB and counts on the collaboration of Moritz. Mireia Madroñero is in charge of the artistic management and coordination, and Bankrobber is in charge of the production.
