The University of Barcelona to promote supervised hospital practises in its healthcare centers

The rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Guàrdia, appointed Ricardo Casaroli delegate of the rector for biosanitary research. Casaroli is professor at the Department of Surgery and Surgical Specialization of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the UB and ophthalmologist at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. 

Ricardo Casaroli joins this delegation willing to improve the training of the students at the University of Barcelona in the hospital field, mainly in bachelorʼs degrees of Pharmacy, Nutrition and Psychology. At the moment, the UB is the Ctalan university with the highest number of supervised hospital practices, with more than 2,300 students per year. Practices and professional knowledge are an essential aspect in the studentsʼ training in Pharmacy, Nursing, Podiatry, Dentistry, Psychology, Pharmacy and Nutrition. 

During the first wave of the COVID-10 pandemic, about 500 students of the bachelorʼs degrees of Medicine and Nursing of the UB collaborated with the Department of Health of the Catalan Government as volunteers in hospital centers.

Teaching and research collaboration

One of the delegateʼs new tasks will be, therefore, to promote the teaching and research collaboration with the university hospitals of the University of Barcelona -Hospital Clínic, Bellvitge Hospital and Mutua de Terrassa- and affiliated ones -Badalon Serveis Assistencials, Consorci Sanitari del Maresme, Consorci Sanitari Integral, Fundació Sanitaria Mollet, Hospital Benito Menni, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Hospital Sagrat Cor, Hospital de lʼEsperit Sant, and Hospital Sant Rafael.

In education, the University of Barcelona will promote new learning resources and will introduce teaching innovation improvements in the biosanitary field. Regarding research, synergies with hospitals and affiliated research centers will increase in order to give visibility to the research carried out at the University of Barcelona. In addition, the institution will promote young researchersʼ research and will work on gender equality. 

According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University of Barcelona holds the 65th position worldwide in the field of Health Sciences and Medicine.  

Ricardo Casaroli profile

Ricardo Casaroli graduated in Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Santa Casa de São Paulo, Brazil, in 1982. He got a masterʼs degree in Analysis of Data in Health Sciences (1990-1992) and his postgraduate studies on translational medicine in the field of optical pathology (cellular and molecular biology), human progenitor cells for clinical uses, and medical retinal diseases. He is senior medical adviser (ophthalmology) at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and adjunct researcher at IDIBAPS, in the Research Institute of Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and OftaRed (RETICS). He is the author of ninety scientific articles and two books on regenerative medicine applied to retinal diseases. He has taken part in more than twenty-five national and international competitive research projects, and has supervised twelve doctoral theses. He is currently the secretary of the Medical Committee of Eyes of the World Foundation.
