Five years ago, thirteen Erasmus students of the University of Barcelona lost their lives in a traffic accident in Freginals, when fifty students from twenty different nationalities were going back to Barcelona after visiting Valencia. This morning, the rector, Joan Guàrdia, and the vice-rector for Students and Participation, Marta Ferrer, paid homage to the victims by placing thirteen white roses on the Montserrat stone, which has the date of the accident engraved, in the garden of the Historical Building, a few steps away from the magnolia and the thirteen boxwoods that were planted in memory of the students.

“Today five years ago was a very sad day for the University of Barcelona. On March 20, 2016, the life of the families of thirteen students who came here with an Erasmus grant and who died in an accident broke. On their fifth death anniversary, we want to pay a special homage to the victims and give our emotional support to their families”, noted Guàrdia.

Apart from the floral offering, organized by the UB, the rector will attend a mass in memory of the students, organized by the Italian Consulate in Barcelona in the church of Santa Anna, together with the vice-rector for Internationalization Policy, Markus González Beilfuss.
