The University of Barcelona obtained the renewal of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education, awarded by the UB and which is necessary to take part in the new Erasmus program, which covers the 2021-2027 period. The UB has renewed the Erasmus Charter after passing the accreditation process published by the EU with the highest score (100 out of 100). In this process, which started and was closed during the mandate of the previous rectorʼs team mandate, the University presented a project that showed that the strategy of the institution is linked to the principles of the Erasmus program, and its strategical objectives on digitalization, inclusion, sustainability and civic commitment.

The new Erasmus program 2021/2027 sets several strategical lines. One is the European Student Card Initiative, which includes, among other actions, the creation of a European student identificatir to enable access to services, but also the transfer of the academic records and to share information between institutions. Another line is inclusion, in its widest sense, so that people from different environments (such as students who work or students with family responsibilities) can take part in the Erasmus program. The sustainability line is linked to the European Green Deal, and the line on civic commitment refers to building a European identity, that is, to foster common values and promote social integration, among other objectives.

The UB has taken part in Erasmus programs since these started in 1987. During these years, Erasmus programs have driven initiatives that have later consolidated at a European level and beyond the program, such as ECTS credits. The Erasmus program 2021-2027 includes, for instance, new ways of hybrid mobilities. Also, it features the European universities that were included in the previous Erasmus program, during which the UB presented and obtained the coordination of the European university CHARM-ES. The new Rectorʼs team is working to fulfil the commitments acquired by the UB with the Erasmus Charter and coordinate them with the governing program in fields such as digitalization and electronic innovation.
