The University of Barcelona will hold on Wednesday June 2, the 9th Environmental Session, jointly organized with Torres Family and the meteorologist and lecturer of Physics of the UB Tomàs Molina. Under the motto “Money from Europe, will it help us to break with the current indifference regarding climate change?”, the meeting will gather twelve experts willing to analyse how European funds could unblock the government and societyʼs lack of actions regarding climate change.

This new edition of the Environmental Session will take place in the Paranimph of the Historical Building of the University of Barcelona with the attendance of fifty people, and will be live-streamed on the Youtube channel of the University. This is the first linked event to the Conference on the Future of Europe (COFE), to be held in Catalonia. This time, there will be a participative process through an online questionnaire, available in the European Union platform, through which citizens can give their opinion on which should be the priorities to fight against climate change. The results of this questionnaire will be published during the session.

Participants in the session are representatives of the different administrations, to explain the strategies and action plans against climate change: Beatriz Yordi, director of European and International Carbon Markets of the Directorate-General for Climate Action, will participate on behalf of the European Commission; Hugo Morán, Secretary of State for Environment at the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographical Challenge will participate on behalf of the Spanish Government; Albert Castellanos, secretary-general of the Department of Vice-Presidency and Economy and Finance, will represent the Catalan Government, and Eloi Badia Casas, councillor of Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition, will represent the Barcelona City Council.

Moreover, the voice of society will be represented by influencers such as Carlota Bruna, instagrammer and ambassador of the European Climate Pact; Josep Perelló, leader of OpenSystems, professor of the UB and founding member of the Open Science Office of Barcelona, and Javier Peña, influencer of the climate crisis and founder of Hope!

After the speeches, a debate will take place to talk about mobility in Catalonia, promoted by European funds, with the participation of Adrián Fernández, head of mobility at Greenpeace Spain; Salvador Sedó, director of Sustainable Development at Work Development; José María Baldasano, emeritus professor of Environmental Engineering at the UPC and doctor in Chemical Sciences at the UB, and a representative of the automotive industry in Catalonia.

The conclusions of the 9th Environmental Session will be presented by Laura Rahola, head of Communication at the Representation of the European Community in Barcelona, just before the closing ceremony, which will be held by Joan Guàrdia, rector of the University of Barcelona; Miguel A. Torres, president of the Torres Family, and Tomàs Molina.

As part of these sessions, there will be the award ceremony of the 7th Torres & Earth Award to environmental innovation, which aims to share and honor the studies, projects, experiences and initiatives that help the preservation of the environment.
