That is 7 million euros more than in the previous edition. The research staff of the UB has obtained a total of 168 projects out of 280 applications.

Comparing the results of the last calls, the achieved amount has been increasing in recent years, especially in this last call. Moreover, the increase in the success rate of the achieved projects is noteworthy, since it has gone from around 50% to the current 60%. As the vice-rector for Research, Jordi Garcia, points out, “this increase indicates the good evolution of research at the University of Barcelona, despite the lack of a satisfactory basic budget for research regarding the institutions, but mostly the great effort of the TRS of the UB, and it reflects that the UB continues to be the first entity of research in Catalonia”. For the UB, this call represents around 30% of all competitive projects managed by the University, both in number of projects and in amount, according to 2020 data.

Results by faculty

Regarding the faculties, the faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences and Biology have received more than twenty projects, while the faculties of Pharmacy and Food Sciences, Geography and History, Chemistry, Psychology and Physics, are above 10. These also correspond to those who have obtained higher amounts. These differences in figures and budgets reflect the diversity inherent in a generalist university, such as the UB, which covers almost all areas of knowledge.

State R&D&I Program

Specifically, these data are from the proposal for a provisional resolution, published on June 17, on the grants for the 2020 calls for "R&D projects", within the framework of the State Programme for Knowledge Generation and Scientific and Technological Strengthening of the R&D&i System of the State Program on Scientific and Technical Research for Innovation 2017-2020.

These calls are the most important set of state grants for the promotion of scientific and technical research, funding 3,194 projects with 411,15 million euros. The UBʼs received amount is a 5.31% of this total.

The benefiters are university research groups, R&D&I public centres and R&D private non-profit centres. These resources promote the Spanish scientific community to be able to tackle high-quality, new and relevant scientific and technical research projects that contribute to knowledge progress, as well as to the resolution of societyʼs problems and economy growth. Also, they enable to incorporate trainee pre-doctoral researchers to carry out their doctoral thesis in some of the research groups and centres. .
