Are we ready for the digital revolution we are immersed in? Are we really aware of what we buy and use? Do we talk enough about the death? On September 23, researchers of the University of Barcelona will answer these and other questions, within the framework of the Science Cafés organized by La UB Divulga, on the occasion of the celebration of the European Researchers’ Night. Also, other participants in this initiative are research groups and researchers of the University, such as the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB) of the UB, with a workshop on quarks and a roundtable on blackholes and gravitational waves.

Science cafés in the Ferran Soldevila garden of the Historical Building

In order to offer a multidisciplinary view to daily issues which affect us all, during the whole day, experts on different knowledge fields will take part in the six science cafés organized by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i) on the occasion of the European Researchers’ Night. On September 23, there will be two morning sessions aimed at high school students, and four sessions in the afternoon aimed at the general audience. There is limited room capacity and previous registration is required.

The activity starts at 10:30 a.m. with two simultaneous sessions in the Ferran Soldevila garden: “El cicle vital: naixement i mort”, with participation from the faculties of Mathematics and Computer Science, Medicine and Health Sciences, and Psychology; and the café “Viurem a Mart?”, to debate with the experts from the faculties of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and Computer Science on whether we will be able to live in the red planet some day.

During the afternoon, there will be more talks in the garden. At 5:00 p.m., the researchers from the faculties of Law, Philosophy, Mathematics and Computer Science and Medicine and Health Sciences will debate on digital revolution in the café “La revolució digital, estem tots preparats?”. At the same time, the café “Residus i microplàstics” will feature experts from the faculties of Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and Computer Science.

At 7:00 p.m., there will be the café “Ciutats de futur: intel·ligents i dinàmiques”, with researchers from the faculties of Geography and History, Mathematics and Computer Science and Economics and Business. At the same time, there will be the café “Etiquetatge: sabem què comprem?”, with participation of researchers from several faculties.

This activity counts on the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The Institute of Cosmos Sciences will offer two activities

ICCUB has prepared two more activities. The first one is the workshop “La matèria i l’existència dels quarks”, which will take place on Thursday, September 23 at 11:00 a.m. in Auditori Barradas, brought by the members of the Group on Hadronic, Nuclear and Atomic Physics of the UB. To attend the workshop please send an email to pessicsdeciencia@gmail.com.

The second activity is a roundtable for all audiences, titled “El siglo de la gravedad. Agujeros negros y ondas gravitacionales”, to take place in Casa Golferich, on Thursday, September 23, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The activity is free but previous registration is required.

Rainwater and nanoparticles, the stars of the other activities

On Thursday, September 23, Montserrat Llassat-Botijas will offer, in Auditori Barradas in Hospitalet de Llobregat, a trip to the past in order to find the paths where the rainwater used to flow. It will take place at 5:30 p.m.

On Friday, September 24, at 8:00 p.m., in Cosmocaixa, there will be the performance "Ballant amb nanopartícules", a show that results from movement and dance to explain how nanotechnology is shaking up our lives. This activity is free but it requires previous registration.

Catalonia will hold more than 200 activities

The European Researchers’ Night is a public event dedicated to science dissemination, held every year, at the same time, in more than 300 cities from 30 European countries. Its objective is to bring research and its people closer to the audience of all ages, and to share it publicly and in a ludic way.

For the fourth year in a row, Catalonia joins this event, which will take place from September 21 to 24. Institutions, entities and research centres from all Catalan provinces are organizing talks, workshops, games, experiments and many activities for all audiences. The program is available on their website.
