From the UB classrooms to Silicon Valley

Anna Navarro Descals (Olot, 1968) ─professionally known as Anna N. Schegel─ is the vice-president of the Department of Product, International Market and Globalization in Procore Technologies. A story that started in the rooms of the Faculty of Philology and Communication of the UB, and which continues in Silicon Valley, where she became a role model in the field of technology, data management and artificial intelligence. In 2020, the journal Analytics Insight named her the most influential woman worldwide in technology.

Graduated in English and German Philology at the UB, when she was 24, she moved to California to build a translation company, The San Francisco Translation Company, and she ended up in Silicon Valley, where she has been living for three decades. Her perseverance took her to the top leading companies in the technological field: Cisco Systems, Xerox, VMware, VeriSign, and NetApp, the world leading company of data storage, where she held the position of vice-president for twelve years. Moreover, she is the co-founder of several NGOs such as Women in Localization, an entity that provides support to women in the labour market.

Although her life is in the United States, she has always been updated on what happens here and also at the University, where she is now back to give the opening lecture of this academic year 2021/2022. Under the title “De Catalunya a Califòrnia: la digitalització com a exemple de globalització efectiva”, Navarro will tell the students of the UB about her experience, an exceptional example of how the University can provide you a wide range of opportunities.

The opening ceremony, open to the university community

The Paranimph of the Historical Building will be open to the university community to hold the opening ceremony for the academic year. After a year of health restrictions, the opening ceremony for the academic year takes back its format, with the academic retinue, the traditional medal awards for the retired teaching and research staff and the administrative and services staff, and the performance by the UB Choir. People can attend the ceremony but there will be limited room capacity, and it will be live-streamed on the UBtv channel.

The opening ceremony is held at the UB since the 16th century, and it is the oldest ceremony held at the University.
