The UB improves positions in the BGU and NTU rankings
The University of Barcelona improves positions in the international ranking Best Global Universities (BGU), in which it holds the 87th position worldwide, compared to last yearʼs 90th position. The UB is listed in the 28th place among European universities and is again the leading one in Spain. Regarding knowledge areas, it outstands in gastroenterology and hepatology (third position worldwide) and it gets noteworthy positions in infectious diseases (14th position), pharmacology and toxicology (32), neuroscience and behaviour (36), oncology (36), clinical medicine (37), psychiatry and psychology (38), surgery (46), cardiac and cardiovascular systems (53), endocrinology and metabolism (53), molecular biology and genetics (55), space science (58), radiology, nuclear medicine and medical imaging (64), agricultural sciences (65), public, environmental and occupational health (71), cell biology (73), immunology (75), plant and animal science (84), and environment/ecology (86).

North American institutions lead the new edition of the Best Global Universities, which is headed by Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley and University of Oxford. In Spain, the University of Barcelona is followed by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (144), Pompeu Fabra University (188), the Autonomous University of Madrid (208), and the University of Valencia (212).
The ranking is based on a set of indicators that measure the academic research performance and their national and international reputation, scientific publications, citations, conferences and international collaboration, among others.
Top Spanish University in the NTU ranking
This October, the National Taiwan University Ranking (NTU), in which the UB is again the top university in Spain, has been published. In this list, the UB holds the 77th position worldwide. It stands out in medicine: it holds the 44th position worldwide. In particular, it gets relevant positions in the disciplines of pharmacology and toxicology (45th place), immunology (45), and clinical medicine (48).
The National Taiwan University Ranking, made by the National University of Taiwan, aims to compare the scientific performance of the universities worldwide. It uses bibliometric data from the academic publications. The UB is the top university in Spain in the eight indicators the ranking uses. It gets a good score (63.7 out of 100) in the H-index, which quantifies the scientific performance and the impact of the researchersʼ articles, and in the indicator of the average number of citations in the last 11 years, with a score of 59.6.
Most of the top influential researchers are affiliated with public universities
The University of Barcelona is the Spanish university institution with most researchers within the 2% of most influential scientists in the science disciplines, regarding to its production and impact, according to the database published by the editorial Elsevier. The database gathers the leading scientists in different disciplines and is made out of the information provided by the Scopus database.
Specifically, in this 2% of global leading scientists are 167 researchers from the University of Barcelona. These figures mean a growth compared to the 140 UB affiliated from the last update of the database, from last March. The UB is followed by the Complutense University of Madrid, with 96 researchers, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, with 83. The mentioned researcher staff of the UB belongs to more than 50 disciplines from different knowledge areas, ranging from life and health sciences to humanities, going through experimental sciences such as physics and chemistry, engineering and social sciences, and economics.
Among the 186,177 scientists in the database, 2,815 are affiliated with Spanish institutions and, among these, 1,754 (62.35%) with the universities, mostly public universities. Regarding Catalonia, the total figure of scientists is 736, 435 of them in public universities.
Moreover, the allocations are made on the base of the last article by the Scopus database for the analysed period, which can affect the results regarding the research staff with different allocations.
