The works ʻNeisit Point Lighthouseʼ and ʻObservantʼ receive the first prizes in the fotoNAT-UB 2021 contest
Neist Point Lighthouse, by Patricia García, student of the bachelorʼs degree of Biology at the Faculty of Biology and Observant, by David Lecegui, former student of the CRBA wildlife photography courses, are the awardees in the categories of wildlife and zoology, respectively, of the 15th edition of the fotoNAT-UB wildlife photography contest.
With the support from the Vice-Rectorʼs Office of Research, the Vice-Rectorʼs Office of Students and Participation and the Faculty of Biology of the UB, this contest is a traditional initiative by the Animal Biodiversity Resource Centre of the UB (CRBA) to promote nature photography. The awards honor the top photographs in the categories of zoology (animal photography) and wildlife (nature or slightly transformed landscapes, geology, wild fauna and flora, and the relationship of humans with nature).
The award ceremony for the fotoNAT-UB prizes took place on Thursday, December 2, with the participation of the vice-rector for Research, Jordi Garcia Fernàndez; the dean of the Faculty of Biology, Rosina Gironès, and the director of CRBA and secretary of the jury, Antoni Serra, member of the Department of Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Environmental Sciences and the Biodiversity Research Institute (IRBio) of the UB.

In the category of wildlife, the other awardees were Joan de la Malla, former student of the CRBA wildlife photography courses (second prize, El descans del pallasso); Marina Duarte, student of the bachelorʼs degree of Conservation-Restoration of Cultural Goods at the Faculty of Fine Arts (secondary prize, Sequoies); Laia Bosch de Basea, member of Alumni UB (secondary prize, La força de lʼaigua); Lucía Cortés, student of the bachelorʼs degree of Physics at the Faculty of Physics (secondary prize, Lʼarc de Sant Martí a la sabana africana), and Raquel Soley, former student of the CRBA wildlife photography courses (secondary prize, Natura sàvia).
In the zoology category, the awardees were Èric Yherla, AdSS member at the Animal Experimentation Unit of the Scientific and Technological Centres of the UB (second prize, Companys de pis); Arnau Gelpí Rey, student of the bachelorʼs degree of Geography at the Faculty of Geography and History (secondary prize, Humpback whale); Pablo Bou, AdSS member at the Catalan Network for Blue Innovation (BlueNetCat) of the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (secondary prize, Caçador de lluna plena); Danko Castaño, student of the bachelorʼs degree of Biology at the Faculty of Biology (secondary prize, La llar dʼinfants), and Nil Sugranyes, student of the bachelorʼs degree of Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Biology (secondary prize, Carduelis spinus / Spinus spinus (Lluer)).
The awarded pieces of the 15th edition of fotoNAT-UB have been selected out of a total of 218 photographic works (79 in the wildlife category and 139 in the zoology one), submitted by 116 participants. During the selection process, forty photographs were chosen as finalists (20 in the zoology category and 20 in the wildlife one). Among this yearʼs participants were 69 students, 6 Alumni UB members, 23 former students of CRBA courses, 10 AdSS members and 8 TRS members.
Like in previous editions, the headquarters of the CRBA offer an exhibition with the awarded pieces and the finalist ones, including a video with all the photographs that were submitted to the contest.
